Monday Money Review

Magnifying Glass - Results

What a lovely weekend! The kind to be treasured — just the right amount of relaxation and effort; healthy choices and indulgent snacks; togetherness and alone time.

Let’s see if the money tells the same store. So, here we go:

Before

  • Gas = $25
  • Personal Care (haircut, mani/pedi, etc.) = $0
  • Groceries = $5

    • Fun Outing = $8.80
  • Total = $88
    • Total = $385.78

Although gas prices went up .15 per gallon over last week, it was still a reasonable purchase with less than $25 out of pocket.

I went back to Aldi Friday after work to pick up some avocados and other vegetables in order to have a successful meat free weekend.

There is a new Dollar Tree somewhat in my area!  It changed over from a Deals to a DT and I was able to not only pick up desired snacks and cleaning supplies, but I was also able to use some coupons!

Mirror Image had a soda during intermission at the orchestra, our fun outing on Friday. It cost $2.00.  This combined with the $6.80 round trip train tickets brought out cultural outing in under $10!

The rest of our weekend consisted of laundry and dog hair management (yuck), exercising Thrifty Pooch, fun with homemade clay, homemade Spinach pizza, a murder mystery movie from the library and Walking Dead after Mirror Image went off to sleep.

I came in under budget because I neglected to pick up some prescriptions and I utterly failed at the Dollar Tree but came in under budget overall. Bye-bye weekend money!

Weekend Money #5

“My BEST friend’s parents’ are going out of town for a wedding. Can she stay with us while they are gone?”  I know what that means…

That means the weekend is here and it is time to plan the money!

I am going to pre-spend here on this post, then reconcile on Monday.  I plan for this to be another avenue of accountability and budgeting.  So here we go:

  • Church (tithes/offering) = $28
  • Gas = $25
  • Personal Care (haircut, mani/pedi, etc.) = $0
  • Groceries = $0
  • Dollar Tree = $10
  • Vehicle Service/Repair = $0
  • Clothes Shopping = $0
  • Gifts = $0
  • Restaurant = $0
  • Zips Dry Cleaning = $0
  • Prescriptions = $0
  • Fun Outing = $25
  • Total = $88

Church (tithes & offering) – Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Prov. 3:9–10

Groceries – My grocery budget is usually stressful so to see this as $0 is fun although not completely accurate.  With the giggly girl sleepover starting Friday after school, I had to get the food earlier in the week. So, while groceries are not part of the Weekend Money this time, they are definitely counted in the grocery budget. Counted to the tune of about $41 in fact.

Gas – Hooray for continued low gas prices!

Dollar Tree – Dollar Tree is running an online Easter Basket Contest for the Value Seekers Club. I may have the girls make one or two to submit for consideration.  Or maybe we will make fun vision boards.  The $10 will go towards supplies at the Dollar Tree to keep the giggly girls too busy to harass the dog.

Restaurant – Nope.  Absolutely not.  We went to McCormick & Schmick’s Wednesday to take advantage of the Shrimp & Shuck for Buck promo.  $42 and a very wet walk to the car later, we are done with restaurants this week.  (The oysters were delish!)

Prescriptions – I need to pick them up but who am I kidding at this point?

Fun – In honor of our overnight guest and Mirror Images awesome interim Progress Report, we will go hang out at RockinJump. I picked up a Groupon a couple months back so admission for 2 is covered. The $25 is for climbing socks and potential incidentals.

I have to say, I am looking forward to the weekend!

I will be back on Monday to tally up my successes (or fails).

MMMMMMMM….Monday

It was a beautiful weekend with highs in the ‘50s.  I was inspired and therefore very, very busy!!  Later this week, look for some photos of organizing madness in the Thrifty Image household.

Gas was a little higher than planned as I filled up on Sunday rather than earlier in the weekend.

OMG groceries! I left my shopping list on the refrigerator door and that was a major fail.  Also, the price of avocados went back up and I treated us to a package of jumbo shrimp so I could make Mirror Image’s favorite breakfast – shrimp and grits. I basically just got a lot more than I planned and more that what I should have.

No Dollar Tree this weekend. I have most of the supplies I need for room reorganization right now and let’s face it – I had practically moved in to the DT over the last couple of weeks.

I hadn’t planned to go shopping but, Mirror Image made a case for new combat boots as she is embracing the hipster wardrobe style. So we went to the Salvation Army nearest our area.  We had barely walked in the store when she spotted a pair. Who goes to a Thrift Store and leaves with exactly what they came for? We purchased those as well as a short jacket for her. While it was kind of fun being around STUFF, I didn’t feel at all compelled to break my personal clothes shopping ban.

The restaurant category was in effect again this weekend. For fun, I suggested dessert for lunch after church on Sunday and Mirror Image got a McFlurry with M&Ms. She doesn’t read this blog so I can honestly share that this was solely for my benefit.  I needed the extra time for the lunch I had planned to prepare and eating a dessert would keep her from reminding me how hungry she was, over and over again, until it was ready.  FYI – I made Rhee’s b-b-q chicken for lunch and it was delish.

Weekend money fail.

So I went over budget largely due to a whopping grocery extravaganza and an unexpected shopping trip for the kid.

Better luck next weekend!

“What fun and exciting things are we going to do this weekend?”  I know what that means…

That means the weekend is here and it is time to plan the money!

I am going to pre-spend here on this post, then reconcile on Monday.  I plan for this to be another avenue of accountability and budgeting.  So here we go:

  • Church (tithes/offering) = $328
  • Gas = $20
  • Personal Care (haircut, mani/pedi, etc.) = $0
  • Groceries = $45
  • Dollar Tree = $10
  • Vehicle Service/Repair = $0
  • Clothes Shopping = $0
  • Gifts = $0
  • Restaurant = $0
  • Zips Dry Cleaning = $0
  • Prescriptions = $35
  • Fun Outing = $0
  • Total = $438

Church (tithes & offering) – I was paid this week – yeah! I set aside my tithes and offering first.

Groceries – I need to stock up on the basics – dairy milk, almond milk, cheese and the like. Aldi has chicken thighs on sale and that is my FAVORITE chicken to buy so that is definitely on the list. Aldi also has some clothes drying racks on special this week I may pick-up.  I would like to start using the dryer less to save money.

Gas – It is so inexpensive now.  I think it will only take $20 to fill me back up.  I am just below half tank right now.

Dollar Tree – I still need a few more organization bins and then I should be done. I will also likely get Mirror Image a few boxes of Hot Tamales or Sugar Babies.  She will separate those out into smaller portions to add to her lunch during the week.

Restaurant – Gosh, I hope not. I gave in to Mirror Image last weekend and went to Panda Express. But I want to stay strong this weekend.

Prescriptions – I will definitely pick that medicine up this weekend!

Fun – Mirror Image wants to have a friend over for a slumber party this weekend.  So between that and making clay for her class project, I think we will have the giggly girl and making a mess fun all covered. The adults of the house will be having fun walking the thrifty pooch many times, watching movies from the library, reorganizing the home office and taking FULL advantage of the FREE HBO PREVIEW on Verizon FiOS this weekend!!!

I will be back on Monday to tally up my successes (or fails).

MONDAY MONEY REVIEW

Monday - Let's Do This

What a great weekend! I spent the weekend enjoying visiting relatives on Saturday, organizing and cleaning and watching Beyoncé have a sing/dance off with Bruno Mars.  On top of that, thanks to some awesome Game Day food specials at Aldi, I laid out a pretty fantastic spread to nibble one.

Here’s is where we work out if the weekend matched the expected weekend money so here we go:

    • Clothes Shopping = $0

  • Prescriptions = $50
    • Prescriptions = $63.60
  • Fun Outing= $0
  • Shopping – Ollie’s = $26.98
  • Total = 609.08

Hmmmm…I came right around budget but…

I spend too much on groceries.  I wanted to make some special foods for the Super Bowl and everything was delicious but this category needs to be tightened.

The Dollar Tree budget was blown because I decided to reorganize my bathroom closet as well as some shelves in the laundry area and the refrigerator.  I purchased some organizing bins and totes for the Dollar Tree to make sure everything has a place.  I am so pleased with how those spaces turned out!!

Auntie’s B-day celebration has been accomplished and enjoyed!

I didn’t need to use the budgeted $30 for restaurant this weekend because my dear Cousin treated!  I had yummy lobster tacos and couldn’t finish them all.  Unfortunately I left my doggie bag in my mom’s car.  It would have made a great pre-midnight snack.

Prescriptions from Sam’s Club cost a lot more than I was expecting.  I still have a deductible to meet combined with the fact that the lower cost I was expecting to receive was only if I was a Sam’s Club Plus Member.  It pays to read EVERYTHING.

I unexpectedly went shopping at  Ollie’s.  I had a coupon for 15% off the entire purchase and I used it to get more ice melt and a new shovel.  More snow is expected in the area this week and I want to be prepared.  Also, I want Mirror Image to start helping me out.  She is little but mighty and shoveling is best done is pairs Happy Face Wink.

So there is it. Weekend Money reconciled.  I am going to go back to working for the weekend now.
